In 2005, I had the good fortune to work with John McCabe and John McCabe Construction during the remodel of my home in Dollar Point, North Lake Tahoe. The home was built in the early 1970’s, as evidenced by the original orange shag rug! The project essentially entailed removing all sheet rock and stripping the interior “right on down to the studs.” The floor plan was significantly modified; the stone fireplace was dismantled and relocated; electric, heating and plumbing systems were “made new.” The exterior roof, siding and windows were changed and/or replaced. All appliances, fixtures and finishes were of the highest quality.
Being both an institutional commercial developer, as well as a Certified Public Accountant, I was interested in completing my project to the highest standards, both on schedule and within a reasonable budget. John McCabe not only delivered all of this to me, but he also delivered solutions to the toughest problems that often occur during a “gut and re-build” remodel. Needless to say, John’s good nature and sheer competence minimized my owner anxiety and, more importantly, made the remodel process both enjoyable and rewarding.
John McCabe and his crew proved themselves to be amazing Old World Craftsmen! The product that was delivered to me at the end of the construction process was fantastic; I challenge anyone to find evidence that my home was built prior to 2005. John and his crew are “can do” guys who deliver the highest quality product, in the shortest amount of time, at the most affordable of prices.
During my 35 years of business experience, I have rarely met a man with more integrity and honesty than John McCabe. He has become both a genuine friend and reliable resource. If anyone is considering a high end, high quality, complex real estate project, I would strongly recommend that they use John McCabe Construction. I look forward to working with John and his crew, once again, at the first available opportunity. Knowing John as well as I now do, I am certain that when you work with John McCabe Construction, you will receive the same service, and experience the same end-result as I once did on my now-new-home.

We would highly recommend John for either new construction or remodeling. Not only is he a highly competent and skilled contractor, he has great design ideas, wonderful subcontractors and ‘on-the-spot’ customer service. He always listens and ‘hears” what is said by the client and “gets the job done”, on time, on budget and with a smile and a happy attitude. He is a pleasure to work with and we consider him a friend. We will definately use him again when we are ready for the next phase of our remodeling.

I first teamed up with John McCabe in Truckee on a residential design build complete remodel. This type of project is always a challenge because it presents a lot of unknowns for the builder when executing the structural changes and the design.
What I appreciated about John is that he liked to work closely with everyone involved. Anticipating when to bring together the Owner, Architect, Designer, and Engineer enabled him to execute the building of the structure, with all the aesthetics and details of both the exterior and interior design and ultimately finesse all systems and construction details. Usually present overseeing work at the job site, he is often hands-on and remainds mindful of the intent, timeline, and overall budget. With years of experience in fine home building, John applies his own expertise and professionalism to all aspects of the construction work. With a keen eye for detail and quality, his finish work is well thought-out and masterfully executed.
John McCabe is a quality builder committed to the project’s success; he makes a real difference in the outcome. Periodically working together for more than a year I would welcome the opportunity to do so again.

Harry Truman once wrote, “I find that the men who get to the top are those who do the jobs they have in hand, with everything they have of energy and enthusiasm and hard work.” John McCabe, the builder in charge of building our home on 1900 John School Trail in Alpine Meadows, is one of those men.
We broke ground last year on May 23, and while we hoped to be in the house by Christmas, realistically, we didn’t expect to be able to move in until January. On December 23, exactly seven months later, John McCabe handed me the occupancy permit, and I handed him a bottle of champagne. To finish a house of this stature in seven months flat in Tahoe is quite a feat. John McCabe delivered. He was on task often seven days a week, had an excellent rapport with both his crew and the sub-contractors, and got the job done.
But John did more than just get the job done. His attention to detail, his flexibility, and his craftsmanship were outstanding. I designed some intricate tile work in the bathrooms and kitchen, and John worked closely with the tile crew to be sure it was executed perfectly. John left no detail unturned, adding some finishing touches of his own. When we decided at the last minute to add a fireplace in the bedroom, John came back with a typical McCabe comment: “No problem. If that’s what you want, we’ll make it work
One of the main features we envisioned for the house was the half log staircase in the entryway. Again, it was John who made this happen. Not only is he an exemplary foreman, he is a talented craftsman. He both designed and built the stairs.
For me, as a client, one of the most important attributes of a foreman is his ability to communicate. I was in Tahoe all summer during the framing process, and visited the job site daily. No matter what my question (as an English teacher I always tell my students there is no such thing as a stupid question, but believe me, I asked John some stupid questions), John would come down off the roof beam with a smile and patiently address my questions and concerns.
Three years later, we sold our “dream house” for financial reasons and bought a funky, smaller 60s era house down the street. Needless to say, some remodeling needed to be done, and needless to say, I called John. This time I was not able to be in Tahoe during the process, but I didn’t need to be. I had total faith in John. He knew exactly what I wanted, and again went beyond the call of duty with suggestions of his own, which were always right on!
If you want a contractor who will get the job done on time, get it done right, and keep his subcontractors and clients smiling, John McCabe is your man.

We have collaborated on numerous projects with McCabe Construction and appreciate the open lines of communication throughout the design and engineering phases. John is pleasure to do business with and his company takes pride in their work providing quality construction and true craftsmanship for his clients. John is hard-working and has his bags on alongside his co-workers, and puts his personal touch on all projects. This is an excellent company and would recommend them to anyone and often do.
